Key conventions of my magazine

Key elements

How I will conform to the current affairs genre:
  • I will use copy to show that my magazine includes high quality stories.
  • I will feature main stories that are relevant to current society. Both stories will be about identity and how society presents stigmas around certain identities. One magazine will feature a model posed as a gay teenager who is talking about the hate he has faced due to being part of the LGBTQ+ community and the challenges he has had to go through and continues to go through everyday. The main story of my second magazine will feature an Asian teenager talking about her fight around racism including how she believes that she has had to hide her true identity to conform to normal British society to fit in and not be discriminated against.
  • I will use sophisticated images to ensure that the magazine is professional is a very high standard to meet the current affairs genre expectation.
  • The stories will feature information on social, environmental and political factors.
How I will conform to the expectations of my audience:
  • The stories I am including involve events that are currently happening, so it will appeal to the young audience as these are issues that they need to try and change to ensure that the society they grow up in will be better.
  • To appeal to a wide range of people within my target audience, I will include two social groups represented amongst the main stories my magazines and other social groups represented on my website.
  • My audience expects stories to be high quality therefore I will trial a range of shot types and locations to see which looks most professional for my image. Along with this, I will be careful when selecting my typography to ensure it looks sophisticated and of a high quality.
  • The audience also expects the magazine to feature a mixture of images and text, so I will include one big image on the front cover of my magazine with copy also on the cover to satisfy both areas.
LOCATION

For the first magazine cover that I produce, I will shoot the image outdoors as this will appeal to my audience as they enjoy nature. I plan on shooting the image at Tynemouth Priory as this background will look rustic and allow for a mixture of natural colours to be included (blue sky, green grass and brown stones). It also adds to the message in which my model is wanting to represent 'that being gay is natural. Every sexuality is normal and we should accept this in our society'. His sexuality is natural just like this landmark and he should be accepted and admired for it like this landmark. The priory is in ruins which will also represent how my model is feeling from society- society has tried to tare him down and has really broken him. The site is still used to hold festivals therefore it is still in the public eye and talked about currently which makes it a relevant location and one which the audience may recognise.

For my second magazine, I will have the image set in a different location. I plan on shooting the image in a very simplistic location as I need the focus of the image to be my model. The location will be a subway/under-passing as this is a metaphor that the model has had to hide away from society. The plain location will also represent that the model doesn't have much in life and this is due to the way that society has treat her. Little use of colour will be used due to the under-passing being white but there are spray-painted features on the walls which will add to the urban effect of the image- allowing for the model to show that she is a normal person in society.

Models

I will use my best friend Elliot as my model for my first magazine as he fits the criteria in which I am looking for within my first magazine. He has the right style, lifestyle and ethics for the intended photograph therefore he will be able to play the part very professionally of a gay man.

I will use my sister as my model for my second magazine as I want the image to feature an Asian girl and my sister fits this criteria. My sister is 14 years old so she almost fits into the age category of the audience so should therefore be able to attract this audience as the audience may be able to identify with the image if they are a similar age or have similar demographics.

Content of images

In the first magazine that I will produce, the front cover image will be of the male model stood at Tynemouth priory next to one of the ruins. The model will be holding a pride flag which represents his sexuality. The flag will be on the shoulders of the model. He will be wearing simple clothing- black jeans, white top, denim jacket and blue sunglasses allowing for him to look fashionable and edgy to attract the young audience. The sunglasses are also helping the model hide his identity as he believes he can't be his true identity due to judgements from the public. He will look directly into the camera which connotations that he is challenging people and protesting for perceptions around being gay to be positive. The image will link to the genre of current affairs as there is still a sigma around the LGBTQ+ community, so the audience will be able to see the representation of this issue through the image and be encouraged to help and change the stigma.

For the contents page of the first magazine, I will have 2 images of my model as there will be a section which features a small insight into the story included about the model. The images will be taken on the same day as I shoot the main image for the front cover to ensure that many features of the images are the same such as the location, clothing and lighting. This will allow for there to be clear link between all images of my model to ensure consistency. One image will be a close up of the pride flag to emphasise the importance of the LGBTQ+ community as the flag is used as a representative symbol of the community. The second image will be of my model positioned in the same location but looking to a different angle to allow the reader to see a different side of my model.

In the second magazine that I will produce, the front cover image will be of a young girl stood in a subway/under-passing. The model will have a head scarf on to represent that she is from an Asian culture, she will have light makeup on to symbolise that she tries to make herself look beautiful as she is heavily judged in society for her looks, beliefs and ethnicity. The model be covering a large portion of her face to show that she is trying to hide her true identity as she isn't being accepted in modern society for who she is.

For the contents page of the second magazine, I will have 2 images of my model as there will be a section which features a small insight into the story included about the model. The images will be taken on the same day as I shoot the main image for the front over to ensure that may features of the images are the same. This will allow for there to be a clear link between the images of my model to ensure consistency. One image will be a side view of my model and the second will be my model carrying out the black lives matter pose as it symbolises that she cares about this community.
